Job Description

About Design at RBC

Our goal is to become our industry’s leader in exceptional digital experiences. To get there, we’re putting strategy, research, design principles, and technical innovation at the heart of everything we do. We need talented, experienced professionals like you to bring this process to life.

You’ll be a great fit for this role if you have an interest in design systems. You’re energized by looking holistically at how a suite of digital products can be designed, developed, and coordinated to create a consistent user experience that supports maximum reuse.

What you’ll do

As the Design Manager on our Design Platform team, you’ll help shape a design system (RIG) used by hundreds of designers and developers across RBC. You’ll collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to design, develop, and test reusable patterns and components for use in digital products. And you’ll consult with senior stakeholders to identify and solve challenges that affect the entire Digital Design team.

You’ll help make work efficient, effective, and enjoyable for your team. Your experience and people skills will help you guide a high-performing product design team, and optimize their output within an Agile framework. You’ll increase the team’s effectiveness in a collaborative, cross-functional environment, overseeing multiple concurrent projects.

Product Design Strategy & Delivery

Guide and advise your team to improve their understanding and mastery of design systems and design operations

Provide product design direction and oversight

Enable excellence and consistency of craft, and use of the design platform’s tools and guidelines

Contribute to product strategy discussions and quarterly planning aligned to organizational OKRs

Formulate and validate design hypotheses through iterative releases of MVP to align business objectives with customer needs

Use Agile methodology and promote a test-and-learn approach to build, deliver and refine the right products for the right audiences in the right ways

Collaboration & Partnerships

Represent the Digital Product Design practice at a leadership level, within cross-functional product teams and with critical senior and executive-level stakeholders

Proactively promote the Design Platform team as a trusted partner that offers measurable business value

Facilitate demos, presentations, workshops and stakeholder sessions with our partners (including business, product, technology, risk, and legal) to uncover product objectives and priorities

Empower your team to succeed with a shared vision; delegating responsibility and removing obstacles that hinder progress

People Management

Establish regular check-ins and empower your team to manage day-to-day tasks, supporting them enough to keep them on track, without micromanaging

Provide career and leadership development guidance through recurring team and individual check-ins

Manage, mentor, motivate, and inspire the team to deliver excellent performance

Build the capability of designers across RBC Digital Design by providing open and candid feedback, direction, and coaching

Assist in sourcing, recruiting, hiring and retaining high-performing talent

What you’ll enjoy

A supportive environment with peers who excel in their discipline

A culture where designers feel included, valued, and heard in the product development process

Contributing to banking solutions used by millions of people, and being part of a global digital organization that puts customer experience at the centre of its work

Pushing the boundaries of digital product design to improve the lives of people and communities

A company and team that understands and respects work/life balance and values your time

What you need to succeed

Must-haves

BA/BS degree in Design (e.g. interaction, graphic, visual communications, product, industrial), Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer Science (CS), or a related field or equivalent practical experience

At least 10 years of experience as a designer

A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience leading teams and complex digital projects

Experience working in an Agile delivery framework in a Scrum or Lean UX model

Experience dealing with the specific challenges of a matrixed enterprise environment

Project management skills to assess and plan resourcing in order to meet delivery requirements

Experience successfully coaching and mentoring team members

Experience with design systems
