Transitional Housing and Support Counsellor
15-month contract position with possibility of renewal; Full time 35 hours/week
Location: Hamilton
Salary range: $ 49,745 - $59,612

Reporting to the Director of Specialized Services and the Violence Against Women (VAW) Coordinator, the incumbent provides support to women who are victims/survivors of violence and their children throughout their care process. The goal of this support is to help them achieve independence and stability for themselves and their children. The counselor also organizes activities for women who are victims or survivors of violence and/or sexual assault.

Responsibilities:

• Provide individual and group intervention services
• Assist women and their children in identifying a safety plan
• Provide information and practical assistance to victims and survivors of violence in the areas of housing, crisis services, financial assistance, and other community resources
• Accompany women, as needed, to outside agencies
• Develop and maintain contacts with community support agencies and shelters
• Participate in the development and implementation of services and programs to meet the specific needs of diverse Francophone women

Specific Skills and Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree or college diploma in social work or other related field
• Membership in the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers or in the process of becoming a member would be considered as an asset
• Ability to manage crises effectively
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Theoretical and practical knowledge of feminist intervention
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and French
• Willingness to work flexible hours and travel to meet client needs
• Possess a vehicle and a valid driver's license
• Provide a criminal record check including the vulnerable sector check
