Job Description

Company description:

KiwiRail Ltd

Job description:

KiwiRail is one of New Zealand's most significant freight movers. We move over a third of our export goods across the country, using a wide range of services from temperature controlled, to containerised and bulk loads. Needless to say, we rely on our talented team to keep us running smoothly - and that's where you come in!

Your Role:
You are provided with the chance to undertake a range of introductory training and development with our trainers on site to learn the skillset for the role and adapt a Zero Harm mindset which will enable you to a career in Container Terminal Operations. We will train you up to safely operate our hoists and enable you to work in the full Container Terminal Operator capacity.

Working as a Trainee Container Terminal Operator you will be responsible for:

  • Undertaking a range of introductory training and development in the fields of CT Operations as well as Health and Safety regulations.
  • Conducting checks on containers/wagons to ensure twist locks and pins are in place, freight is contained, and setups completed.
  • Conducting ground and yard checks, complete forms and paperwork and comply with operating safety rules.
  • Undergo training to achieve certification to operate heavy machinery.

This role is a permanent full-time position (40 hours per week), based on a rotating roster operating 24/7 (Monday to Sunday and including public holidays), so flexibility is your key to success.

Your Skills:
First and foremost, we want you to collaborate and grow while you work at KiwiRail. Our ideal candidate is someone who is passionate, motivated and keen to learn new skills - you don't need experience, just the right work-ethic. We are definitely excited to hear from you if you are looking for a career path and an opportunity to grow - full training and development provided! If you hold a class 2 or forklift licence already - that's great; if you don't - that's great too. We are more than anything after the right person to join our team and those licences are skills we will support you to learn and achieve as you go.

To be successful in this role you need:

  • Class 1 Licence (essential)
  • To be a team player who can work well with others and become part of our "One Winning Team"
  • NCEA Level 1 in Maths and English
  • Ability to work non-standard hours on a 24/7-shift-work roster
  • An interest in the freight and logistics industry
  • An interest in Zero Harm and working safely
  • To be physically fit and have the ability to work outdoors in all weather

Your Benefits:

  • $25.23 starting rate which will increase as you learn new skills
  • Becoming part of our fantastic team with supportive managers and the wider Container Terminal network at KiwiRail with fantastic female and male leaders to learn from
  • Designated career pathway and room to progress with fully paid training
  • Access to support programmes like EAP and our Women's Network ‘Mana Wahine - Women at KiwiRail'
  • Access to discounted travel, health insurance & holiday houses across NZ as part of our Staff Welfare Trust
