At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whānau.

We help shape the policies, settings and performance of the education system for early learning, schooling and tertiary. We do this by building relationships and understanding the needs of those who receive our services. 

About our group and team

The Ākonga Māori team sits in the Secondary Tertiary Group within Te Poutāhū and covers the transition from senior secondary through to tertiary and employment. The Ākonga Māori team is focused on supporting all Māori learners across English and Māori medium settings to ensure that their diverse needs are being met and supported. We support the development of operational policy, teaching and learning programmes, and the secondary-tertiary interface. We work collaboratively with NZQA to ensure alignment of our mutual mahi and processes.

Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role (Permanent, full-time)

The Senior Technical Writer - Ākonga Māori is a key part of the Ministry's operational commitment to Mana ōrite mō te mātauranga Māori, as part of the NCEA Change Programme.

The Senior Technical Writer provides leads discrete pieces of written work in the Rautaki Māori team, and works with the wider Ākonga Māori team to support each team's kaupapa in relation to the NCEA Change Programme. The Rautaki Māori team is responsible for providing technical (written) expertise to produce high-quality written products and analysis, as well as operational policy, evaluation and facilitation services, and providing a strategic lens to wider Ākonga Māori mahi.

The Senior Technical Writer ensures specifications are adequately documented, production notes are accurately recorded for relevant hui, and succinct reports are drafted and communicated both internally and externally.

The person we seek will:

  • Be agile
  • Adept at handling ambiguity and complexity
  • Ideal candidates will take pride in producing high quality work, be a skilled facilitator and will be comfortable independently to achieve defined objectives.
  • They will be sensitive to cultural values and have a good understanding of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and be able to articulate their understanding of mana ōrite mo te mātauranga Māori. 
  • They will have sharp interpersonal skills, superior writing skills, and will be comfortable working with a diverse range of stakeholders and MÄ“nā he matatau ki te reo Māori me ōna tikanga, he wana ake tÄ“rā.

Experience and qualifications

  • Candidates will ideally have a background in middle or senior leadership roles within the NZ secondary sector.
  • A deep understanding of current pedagogical practice and NCEA related assessment practice is necessary
