Your new company

Te Wai Māori Trust is seeking applications for a Senior Policy Analyst to join their team. Te Wai Māori is building their team to deliver on their growing freshwater and freshwater fisheries work programmes.

Te Wai Māori Trust is a subsidiary trust of the iwi owned organisation Te Ohu Kaimoana. Te Wai Māori was established to advance Māori rights and interests in freshwater fisheries. Protecting Māori interests in freshwater fisheries ultimately means protecting habitat to ensure quality water and abundant species. Freshwater fisheries include species, habitat, surrounding land, water column, water quality and quantity.

The Trust’s core values are:

  • Te Mana o Te Wai: reflecting that freshwater ecosystem come first.
  • Whakapapa: reflecting the connection between whānau, hapÅ« and iwi, and te taiao.
  • Kaitiakitanga: reflecting whānau, hapÅ« and iwi obligations, as descendants of ngā atua.

These values determine the way Te Wai Māori Trust approach their mahi and define the way they operate as a trust. Ensuring the health and wellbeing of wai māori (freshwater) is essential for the continued health and wellbeing of our taonga (including freshwater fisheries).

Your new role

This is a unique opportunity to apply research, analysis and strategic advice to projects and issues of significance to iwi and hapū in relation to freshwater, freshwater fisheries and habitat.

You will embrace the opportunity to work for a kaupapa Māori organisation and aspire to build enduring partnerships that honour the values, needs and aspirations of iwi and hapū.

In addition to evaluating and developing policy and leading policy projects, this role also requires the management of various projects, and the ability to report and present your work across a variety of mediums.

This role also involves extensive engagement with iwi, hapū and Crown officials and other stakeholders, and the ability to maintain positive and on-going working relationships with these groups is vital.

What you'll need to succeed

Our client is seeking an experienced professional with 5+ years’ relevant experience with sound knowledge and understanding of Aotearoa’s systems for managing freshwater and freshwater fisheries and activities that affect freshwater and coastal marine areas.

Ideally you will:

  • have knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Māori and iwi development and rights and interests
  • interest in and passion for Te Ao Māori and tikanga Māori
  • an understanding of Te Reo Māori, or a willingness to learn
  • demonstrate highly developed analytical skills
  • have strong written and oral communication skills
  • enjoy challenges and be self-motivated
  • good knowledge of the machinery of government and policy and legislation development
  • be able to operate in a bi-cultural organisation.
  • a tertiary qualification in a related field (such as resource management, environmental planning, public policy, freshwater science or law).

What you'll get in return

We offer a supportive workplace and culture with a team of committed and passionate professionals all working towards a rewarding vision.

As an organisation we strive to support the continued growth and development of our staff and provide a healthy work-life balance for our employees and their whānau.
