About the role 

As a Senior Design Engineering Manager, you will help lead a team of design engineers responsible for building and maintaining UI control systems and experiences that ensure quality and performance for our data customers.  

From pixel perfect layouts and asset production to animations and accessibility compliance, ensuring a polished experience is delivered to our customers. You will work with a cross disciplinary distributed team to define, create, and evolve UI design patterns. Your primary responsibility will be to help the team deliver, document, and evolve our design system implementation, partnering closely with engineering teams.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with designers and product managers to create prototypes that convey experience intentions when static comps can’t tell the whole story. 

Work within and help evolve design processes that promote collaboration, transparency, and agility  

You’ll be working with a team of local and remote engineers to help them succeed. 

Provide hands-on technical leadership: architecture, design, code reviews, development, quality assurance, and observability. 

Work with Program Management to influence business strategy. Build strong relationships with partners within Microsoft to bring innovation to new and existing products. 

Foster a culture of inclusivity and disciplined software engineering practices to deliver business value, guided by data. 

Hire and retain top talent. 

Develop and share best practices, identifying opportunities for increased efficiency. 

Communicate clearly and concisely with stakeholders about status and opportunities.  

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS 

4+ years of experience with a Javascript based ui framework like React, Angular or VUE.  

7+ years of Software Development with focus around Web Application, coding, or UX Design. 

Experience working with CSS in Javascript, HTML, JavaScript, web animations using pure CSS and JavaScript Frameworks, Git, SourceTree, Visual Studio Code or other IDEs. 

Generally familiar with core developer concepts such as Node, NPM, NVM, Yarn, Command Line Tools and version control  

Figma, or equivalent UX/UI design tools 

Experience with web debugging tools like dev tools, firebug or F12 

Excellent written communication Technical / Functional Skills 

Ability to collaborate, pitch, argue, negotiate, and iterate on design remotely Personal Attributes / Interpersonal Skills. 

Argumentation/persuasion skills relevant for building consensus around designs. 

An understanding of design performance implication - creating web/mockups that run fast and are performant in a browser. 

Strong attention to detail, with the ability to match redlines and motion specs down to the pixel. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

Experience with Typescript or other typed languages (java, c, c++, c#, ect) 

Experience with unit and integration testing. Bonus points for familiarity with front end testing frameworks like Puppeteer or Playwright. 

Experience building accessible user interfaces for the web: 400% zoomed views, keyboard accessible controls, and responsive UI. 

Excellent communication, presentation and organizational skills.      

Demonstrate ability to work confidently with Program Management, Development, Product Planning, Brand, Marketing and Usability.    

Strong organizational skills and an attention to detail.
