Job Description

EY has a market leading Tax Controversy team. We are looking for Consultants/Senior Consultants to join our collaborative team. The role is extremely varied and you will assist clients in relation to all stages of the tax controversy lifecycle – including tax governance and controls testing, proactive engagement with the ATO (rulings and voluntary disclosures), management of ATO reviews and audits, and dispute resolution.  You will advise on a broad range of tax technical matters, including tax administration, transfer pricing and the anti-avoidance rules.  You will have the opportunity to interact with and be mentored by senior team members from diverse backgrounds. 

 Your key responsibilities

 This role may suit a junior lawyer or tax consultant with around 2 to 4 years of experience who has either practiced in tax or who has worked in general commercial or litigation roles and is looking to specialise.  Drawing on your tax experience, in your role as a Consultant/Senior Consultant you’ll:

  • Advise a range of clients, from large corporates to high net worth individuals, on a variety of Australian tax technical and tax administration issues
  • Draft various documents including objections, private binding ruling requests, requests for amended assessments and submissions against penalties
  • Assist clients respond to requests for information in the context of ATO reviews and audits
  • Be involved dispute resolution processes – including both alternative dispute resolution and litigation
  • Assist clients to develop, document and test their tax corporate governance and risk management processes

 Skills and attributes for success

 To qualify for the role you must have

  • Legal research and writing skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to develop strong and broad relationships with clients and provide a high level of client service
  • Ability to balance work with several different clients and internal stakeholders on multiple deadlines

 Ideally, you’ll also have

  • Experience in tax controversy and / or tax advisory, preferably within a Big 4 Accounting firm or a law firm
  • Legal practicing certificate desirable but not essential
  • Problem solving abilities and a focus on solutions 
  • Willingness to learn and get involved in a range of projects
