The Border Executive Board was the first interdepartmental executive board formed in early 2021. It comprises six public sector chief executives who are jointly responsible for the performance of the border.

The Border Executive Board team support the executive board and work with the six agencies and the sector to ensure the border system is joined up and working together. There are a number of programmes of work supporting the border function in Covid-19 response and the future thinking for a safe and smart border.   The Border Executive Board Team are hosted by Customs | Te Mana Ä€rai.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

This senior advisor role is the glue to ensuring the right flow of information across the member agencies and with Ministerial offices. The purpose of the Senior Advisor position is to provide high quality advice and support on a broad range of activity to enable the success of the Border Executive Board and Team.

Responsibilities and role function:

• Maintaining situational awareness of relevant border and COVID-19 activity and work across agencies;
• Draft timely and high-quality responses to Ministerial support requests (including OIA requests, Parliamentary questions and correspondence) to ensure the Minister for COVID-19 Response and other Ministers meet their accountabilities to Parliament and the public;
• Manage OIA requests to the Board ensuring appropriate consultation and deadlines are achieved, and preparing documents and reports for proactive release;
• Co-ordinate, confirm and write content for Border Executive Board reporting, such as input for the weekly Minister's report.

To be successful as the Senior Advisor, the successful appointee requires the following knowledge, experience, skills, and personal attributes:

• Has a strong understanding of machinery of government;
• Be a self-starter, organised, and enthusiastic;
• An ability to build and maintain relationships;
• Have an eye for detail and able to maintain a high standard of work;
• Have a deep understanding of the Official Information Act as well as experience in handling complex and sensitive information when processing OIA requests or the proactive release of material;
• Ideally the successful candidate would be from one of the border agencies or have an understanding of the border sector.

To join the Border Executive Board team you will need to meet Customs | Te Mana Ārai requirements as the host agency.

To join Customs in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand permanent resident* and be able to obtain and maintain an Organisational Security clearance along with being able to obtain and maintain security clearance to top-secret level.

(*) A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last ten years, (including ten years ago from the date of this application) and resides in New Zealand at time of application;

OR

A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last ten years, (including ten years ago from the date of this application) and resides in New Zealand at time of application who has travelled out of New Zealand for short periods of time i.e. > 6 months in one of the following countries: Australia, United Kingdom, United States or Canada and can provide police certificates from those countries for the period of absence.

Because of the nature of the Border Executive Board team's and Customs' work you must have a clear Police record. Organisational security clearances are mandatory and are conducted by Customs.  You are also required to pass a drug test.

You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level.
