At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whānau.

We help shape the policies, settings and performance of the education system for early learning, schooling and tertiary. We do this by building relationships and understanding the needs of those who receive our services.

About our Group

The Secondary Tertiary team sits within Te Poutahū and covers the transition from senior secondary through to tertiary and employment.

Te PoutahÅ« delivers and maintains critical services to support responsive learner pathways from early childhood into further education, training, the workforce and society.  Te PoutahÅ« performs a crucial role working between the strategy and policy teams, and the sector facing functions. The Secondary Tertiary team is responsible for operational policy, curriculum and support programmes for Year 11-13 learners, and the secondary-tertiary interface. This includes senior secondary curriculum, NCEA (including implementing the NCEA Review changes through the Review of Achievement Standards (RAS)) and secondary-tertiary programmes.

Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role

The Ākonga Māori Senior Adviser role provides a Te Ao Māori lens on concurrent programmes, contributing to designing and developing curriculum, teaching, and learning initiatives for senior secondary education to support a smooth transition to further education and the world of work. Their key role is to:

  • advise on policy, from design through to implementation, and on the design and delivery of curriculum and assessment content.
  • ensure a deliberate focus on maintaining equitable student achievement by providing thought leadership and guidance in English and Māori medium education.
  • practice best pedagogy in design, development, and delivery.
  • successfully engage, communicate, and facilitate wānanga with Māori whānau, hapÅ«, iwi and communities and will lead collaborative working relationships.
  • engage with key stakeholders to design and develop initiatives, products and services to ensure that desirable outcomes are achieved.

Mōhou ake | About you

  • Have prior stakeholder engagement experience as you will be working with the wider Te PoutahÅ« team and Ministry.
  • You will work consistently to established timeframes, managing own input and ensuring others' contributions are made to enable work to progress.
  • Familiar knowledge and understanding of sensitive cultural values and have a good understanding of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • You will be able to articulate an understanding of Mana ōrite mo te mātauranga Māori as it applies to NCEA. 
  • Your interpersonal skills and superior writing skills will complement your ability to work with a diverse range of stakeholders as a representative of the Ministry.

 Experience and qualifications

  •  A tertiary qualification or minimum 2 years' experience in a similar role
  • Teaching experience.
  • Curriculum coverage, learning area and/or subject expertise and experience to Level 8 of the curriculum (NCEA L3).
  • Identity, culture and language competence in English medium settings.
  • Experience working with Māori whānau, hapÅ«, iwi and communities.
  • Relationships with Māori based professional or recognised organisations and groups e.g Ako Panuku, Regional Māori teachers' associations, Kahu PÅ«toi, iwi, hapÅ«, reo Māori/Māori groups.
  • Endorsement from school/community/organisations.
  • MÄ“nā he matatau ki te reo Māori me ngā tikanga Māori he wana ake tÄ“nā.
