Job Description

Mō tÄ“nei tÅ«ranga mahi | About this role

The New Zealand Customs Service protects and promotes New Zealand across borders. We promote New Zealand's international trade, collect due Crown revenue, and enforce the law by identifying and seizing prohibited imports and exports. We also make sure that lawful traveller's and items can move across our border as smoothly as possible.

Our Māori name - Te Mana Ä€rai o Aotearoa - translates as "the authority that screens and protects New Zealand".

The Security and Integrity Advisor is part of the Risk, Security and Assurance team, a team that provides the Comptroller with independent assurance on Customs' processes and controls, and advisory services that support the organisation across a range of security and integrity-related matters.

We are looking for a self-motivated individual to support the integrity and security programmes for New Zealand Customs.  The Security and Integrity Advisor helps Customs achieve its objectives by:

  • providing advice to staff at all levels of Customs' on the management of security and integrity issues to ensure a consistent approach and continuous improvement;
  • ensuring Customs' security and integrity systems are enduring, robust and handle suspected breaches without delay;
  • offering a practical and flexible approach to best meet the needs of all stakeholders;
  • analysing information to identify trends and gaps for future focus.

We are looking for someone who brings sound knowledge and a willingness to share their perspective with the RS&A team. You will assist with providing the Comptroller, the Executive, the Assurance and Risk Committee and senior managers with independent advice and assurance on the effectiveness of integrity and security processes, and the safeguards they offer over associated risks.

If you have common sense, are logical and analytical, with strong judgement skills, and good communication and people skills, you may be just who we are after.  Experience in writing reports or in analysing data (inside or outside of Customs) would be an advantage, as would graphical reporting skills to enable clear reporting of trends, outcomes and findings.

An ability and willingness to work both collaboratively and independently is very important, as is relationship management internally across the organisation and with external partners.

You will hold a relevant qualification, or you will have equivalent work experience.  Ideally you will have some public sector experience.  Familiarity with Government integrity and/or security expectations would be advantageous.

This position will offer the successful applicant an opportunity to make this role their own, and see the results of hard work put into practice within an agency with a diverse range of functions, benefiting not only NZ Customs but the wider community.

If you are someone who has a keen interest in doing the right thing, is happy juggling priorities, prepared to take on new challenges and enjoys interesting work, we would love to hear from you.

To Apply:

To join Customs in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or NZ permanent resident*.

(*) A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 10 years and resides in NZ at time of application;

OR a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 10 years and resides in NZ at time of application, but may have been absent from New Zealand for periods of six or more months within the past five years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA. You will be required to provide overseas police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand.
