Medical Laboratory Science is a fast pace and dynamic discipline. At Auckland DHB we have recently refreshed our laboratory leadership structure to enable us to thrive in this environment. We are now looking for experienced Medical Laboratory Scientists with leadership skills who are ready to step up and become leaders in our organisation. We have an opportunity for you to grow your career in a leadership role and play an integral role in managing the daily functioning of the lab unit with high efficiency and quality output.

About the role

In this role you will provide daily management of scientific and technical staff and support an Operations Manager in the delivery of strategic objectives for your Unit.

Reporting to an Operations Manager, the prime focus of your role will be to ensure all materials and resources required are available and appropriate for their department/s. You will be responsible for quality, compliance and health and safety systems and ensuring that all systems are achieving the required standards. You will foster an equitable and safe work environment with a culture of continuous improvement and staff wellbeing. This includes ensuring that our people receive the professional mentoring and development to thrive in their careers.

Opportunities will also be present for you to collaborate cross functionally on initiatives as well as drawing upon the Quality and Compliance team and the Scientific and Technical Professional Leader to assist with career pathways discussions.

  • Strong leadership and  people management skills
  • Good ability to read people as you will be required to lead the recruitment of the new staff
  • Ability to develop people
  • Proven process improvement skills
  • Experience with procurement
  • Experience of writing business cases is desirable
  • Ability to communicate with external stakeholders
  • Self- motivated and self- managing
  • Flexible and agile
  • Specialised understanding of haematology processes  and  technology
  • Ability to develop  relationship with suppliers of consumables and equipment
  • Advanced Excel and Word skills
  • Ability to work with the Operations Manager on strategic plan for the department  
  • Ability to collaborate across Labplus with other Scientific Unit Managers and Operations Managers
  • Ability to Escalate and put mitigation plans
  • Role model a strong Health and Safety and Quality culture

Auckland DHB Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is the most specialised tertiary and quaternary medical referral laboratory in New Zealand. It has a history of scientific and clinical excellence and provides local, regional and national services in Anatomical, Clinical and Forensic Pathology as well as services to the Pacific Islands. We offer an extensive analytical pathology service in Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Microbiology, Virology and Immunology, National Testing Centre for Newborn Screening, Forensic Pathology, Anatomical Pathology and Diagnostic Genetics. We hold a number of contracts for the reference pathology testing for all of New Zealand.
