Our vision is that New Zealand will be the world's most sustainable provider of high-value fisheries and aquaculture products.  We are experiencing an exciting time of innovation and improvement in the sector and have a busy pipeline of important work including Fisheries System Reform, Revitalising the Hauraki Gulf, Strengthening Fishing Rules and Policies, Ensuring Healthy Ocean Ecosystems, and the implementation of On-Board cameras to name a few.

The role of the Fisheries Science team is to support Fisheries New Zealand's policy, strategy and management by providing scientific advice on the sustainability of fisheries and on assessing and mitigating environmental effects of fishing.

The Science Officer is responsible for providing timely technical and administrative support to the science team and is expected to work independently and to carry duties through to their completion with a minimum of supervision. You will be responsible for working on independent tailored projects, as well as updating and maintaining science group databases and document tracking systems.

This is a 1-year fixed term position that would suit an energetic individual looking to further their career in marine and fisheries science.

To deliver in this role you will:

  • Maintain and improve core science systems
  • Assist in the maintenance of the database for research reports
  • Support effective management of meetings and events
  • Produce science reviews and documents
  • Assist in research conducted by Fisheries New Zealand and external providers
  • Maintain relationships and a strong platform for cross communication

You will be inquisitive and curious to understand our organisation and the opportunities to assist with the development of technical advice. You will have a strong eye for detail and demonstrated ability to produce.

To be successful in this role you will also need:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability
  • Previous experience in data entry or database maintenance
  • Exposure to basic analytical programming in R
  • Drive for results and comfort in taking initiative to achieve outcomes
  • Ability to produce written material that is fluent and clear
  • Relationship management skills and ability to collaborate
  • Understanding of the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi
