What is the opportunity?

RBC Wealth Management’s Toronto-based Portfolio Advisory Group (“PAG”) is a team of over 20 professionals that is responsible for providing independent investment advice and guidance to the nearly 2,000 investment advisors working under the RBC Dominion Securities (“RBC DS”) banner in Canada.  The Responsible Investing Portfolio Advisor will help RBC DS investment advisors effectively manage client portfolios in a manner that recognizes the impact that Environmental, Social and Governance factors can have on fundamental value (“ESG Investing”) and meets client expectations in aligning their investments with their personal values (“Socially Responsible Investing” or “SRI”).  The Responsible Investing Portfolio Advisor will be a thought leader and share their insights via day-to-day interactions with advisors and colleagues, flagship written publications, branch presentations and client events.  They will play a lead role in the development of new Responsible Investing portfolios and enhance the management of the existing portfolio suite by integrating relevant ESG analysis in the investment process.

The ideal candidate would have strong equity portfolio management and/or research experience with a demonstrated focus on Responsible Investing.  This candidate would have experience as a thought leader and sharing their insights across a range of mediums.  Finally, this candidate would possess an analytical mind, intellectual curiosity, a team-first attitude, exceptional communications skills and an ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

What will you do?

Own and drive the Responsible Investing effort within the PAG equity team including the development of dedicated ESG/SRI portfolios and the incorporation of ESG considerations in the investment process of all portfolios.

Develop the deep understanding of RBC WM’s proprietary Responsible Investing evaluation methodology needed to participate in its refinement and to communicate its findings.

Collaborate with RBC WM’s Responsible Investing team on thought leadership, education and other initiatives to support advisors and clients interested in the space.

Champion the equity team’s Responsible Investing thoughts through written comments, conference call participation and speaking engagements across both internal and external channels.

Provide personalized advice and support to RBC DS investment advisors with respect to security selection and positioning where Responsible Investing is a focus.

Leverage RBC Capital Markets research resources by highlighting relevant analysis and maintaining strong relationships with analysts.

Collaborate with Investment Analytics colleagues to develop and maintain tools that assist PAG colleagues and investment advisors with the visualization and interpretation of Responsible Investing data.

Collaborate with Multi-Asset Advisory colleagues to design and manage holistic Responsible Investing portfolios incorporating equity, fixed income and alternatives as well as utilizing a broad-range of solutions (e.g. ETFs, mutual funds and separately-managed accounts).

Contribute to a positive working environment where teamwork, diversity of thought and mentorship are viewed as crucial ingredients to PAG’s current and future success.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

Bachelor's Degree (or higher level education) and CFA Charterholder (or currently working towards obtaining).

Minimum of five years of experience in equity portfolio management and/or equity research.

Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing authentic Responsible Investing strategies and solutions.

Deep knowledge, passion and expertise in Responsible Investing and ESG.

Experience in providing objective analysis that translates ESG data and considerations into actionable insights.

Experience using various third-party Responsible Investing research and data providers.  Ability to articulate the values and shortcomings of these inputs and how they can appropriately contribute to investment decisions.

Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint as well as financial market research tools including Factset and Bloomberg.

Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) with the ability to distill complex ideas into clear, relevant and timely advice.

Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a demanding and fast-paced environment.

Nice-to-have

10+ years of experience in portfolio management and/or equity research.

Proficiency in relevant programming languages such as R or Python.

Current registration as a Portfolio Manager with relevant regulatory bodies.

French communication skills (both written and oral).
