The University of British Columbia is seeking an outstanding Scientist for a unique posting where the Research Associate will be employed by the University of British Columbia (UBC) through a collaborative research agreement with Eyam Vaccines and Immunotherapeutic (EYAM). This relationship will present an opportunity to experience collaborative research with leading industry and academic experts. Under the direction of Dr. Wilf Jefferies at UBC's Michael Smith Laboratories, the Research Associate will design and conduct molecular biology and immunology assays to test the biological performance and efficacy of vaccines and immunotherapeutics. This lab-based position is a great opportunity to conduct discovery phase research and preclinical assays that will help validate vaccine and immunotherapeutic candidates for clinical development. The Research Associate will be passionate and knowledgeable about vaccine design and function and will have a strong interest to improve vaccine performance.
The Research Associate will play an integral role in the development of a rapidly growing research program and will act as a mentor for junior scientists and postdoctoral fellows. They will work collaboratively with the Research and Development team at EYAM and the academic research team at UBC.
Qualifications and skills
PhD in Immunology, Microbiology (Virology), Molecular Biology or other related fields or MSc. with 5+ years experience in virology and immunological assays in an academic or industry wet laboratory environment
3+ years of postdoctoral (or equivalent) independent research experience in vaccine design, molecular biology, virology, cancer immunology and/or infectious diseases (SARSCoV2 and Influenza)
Working experience in biosafety containment level CL2 (required) and CL3 (ideal) laboratories
Project management experience for vaccine clinical trials (ideal)
Working knowledge of protein, gene, and genomics design and analysis software
Working experience in viral vector and nucleic acid-based vaccine design
Working experience with infectious disease rodent models
Working knowledge and experience of cell-culturing, flow-cytometry, tetramer assays, molecular techniques and animal tissue and serum extraction
Self-motivated and works independently
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively
Excellent documentation and organizational skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills
