The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) provides national leadership to New Zealand's distributed emergency management system. NEMA's primary focus is on the performance and capability of the emergency management system as a whole, across all hazards and all risks and the 4 Rs of risk reduction, readiness, response and recovery. Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

In this role you will be responsible for leading the identification of and managing the potential opportunities to grow the resilience of the Emergency Management system from readiness activities to testing the workforce operational viability of national response plans. Providing thought leadership and collaborative engagement across a wide spectrum to find people, relationships, processes and resource solutions reaching beyond our current Emergency Management (EM) stakeholders.

The position sits with the System Capability Unit that is responsible for leading the identification, design and implementation of strategies that will build the capability, capacity and resilience of the emergency management system across New Zealand. This includes the importance of exercises to test current state, apply lessons learnt and assure readiness.

We are looking for a candidate with the following attributes:

  • Demonstrated experience in working strategically - applying critical thinking and making sound judgements
  • Relevant experience in a similar senior level role working in a collaborative, complex, fast changing and high-pressured environment
  • Ability to provide thought leadership and  high level advice
  • Extensive influencing skills and a proven ability to build strong relationships that achieve results
  • Innovative, with a proven ability to identify needs, conceive new ideas and their implementation
  • Experience working with Central and/or Local Government
  • Experience working with Maori
  • Experience working with networks, business and/or community groups
  • Experience in contract and project management
  • Personal commitment to understanding and applying Te Tiritio o Waitangi, Tikanga Māori and Te Ao Māori

The salary band for this position is $131,987 to $155,279 including Kiwisaver employer contributions.

Whakaritenga Haumaru | Security Requirements

Due to the security requirements of this role, applicants must be a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident.
