PRIMARY PURPOSE
The Psychiatrist:
- Ensures the provision of timely and authoritative mental health assessments and care to persons presenting in hospital, community or other settings, including where there are concerns about what is referred to as the relationship between physical health and mental health;
- Communicates effectively with medical and non-medical colleagues in relevant settings in response to consultations, assessment and formulation, management proposals, collaborative care, and the participation of the person and their social network in these matters;
- Attends to all aspects of care provision and draws on a biopsychosocial cultural spiritual framework that is consistent with Recovery-oriented, person-centred, trauma informed and family inclusive care and includes consideration of the person’s social network;
- Values and incorporates the contribution of lived experience perspectives;
- Performs the role in an ethical manner that reflects the articulated values of the Psychiatrist;
- Ensures that documentation is timely, comprehensive, accurate and respectful;
- Considers the role of psychotropic medication, physical health, and legal frameworks in assessment and care provision but is not limited by these frameworks and aims to provide a service to the person in their context;
- Contributes to high quality communication between colleagues and teams within the Service, between the Service and other teams and services within the LHD, and with other organisations;
- Ensures high quality communication with persons presenting to the Mental Health Service and those who support and care for them;
- Supports and participates in interdisciplinary processes that enrich the learning and expertise of all staff and promotes a culture of reflective practice;
- Optimises collaboration with hospital- and community-oriented services;
- Supports timely and smooth transition of care provision between services;
- Supports the continued development of a model of care that is consistent with the Mental Health Service’s and LHD’s strategic plan and other relevant policy initiatives;
- Works collaboratively with senior medical and senior non-medical staff across the Service to optimise service provision especially in acute and emergency mental health settings;
- Actively contributes to efficient, effective and sustainable use of available resources in both inpatient and community settings;
- Supports high quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervision and research;
- Supports interdisciplinary teaching, supervision and research;
- Contributes to ensuring adequate after hours cover;
- Supports the Medical Director of Mental Health in the provision of high quality care to the population of the LHD working with available resources;
Actively contributes to the development of the Service as an employer of choice. Senior Medical Staff are expected to provide admitting, consultative, diagnostic, procedural, outpatient and on call specialty services as determined and required by the District.
