In this role, you will provide comprehensive veterinary care to the SeaWorld Abu Dhabi (SWAD) animal population (mammals, fish, reptiles, birds, and invertebrates) as well as providing support for the affiliated regional marine life rescue and rehabilitation program.
You will be integral to the maintenance of SWAD’s high animal welfare standards and to the advancement of the field and science of marine animal health. This role will assist and participate in the animal welfare program and play an active role in research opportunities at SWAD.
Your job scope also includes:
- Assists with veterinary laboratory and procedures for all aspects of SeaWorld Abu Dhabi’s collection as directed by veterinarians and leadership which include analyses of hematology, chemistry, microbiology, mycology, parasitology, urinalysis, cytology and water chemistry
- Calculates and does analysis of the laboratory tests results, documents and logs the data
- Creates reports for laboratory files and colleagues reference for various research projects
- Assists with maintenance schedule for laboratory medical equipment, inventory of testing material and components, sanitation of laboratory area in accordance with leadership direction
- Dispenses vitamins and other supplies as needed
- Participates in the medical care of rescued wildlife including but not limited to dugongs, birds, sea turtles, and cetaceans
- Prepares samples for diagnostic testing and ancillary testing
- Consults and educates the zoological colleagues, leadership teams and occasionally guests in areas of health, welfare, and husbandry
- Assists with animal health research projects and prepares data results for presentations and peer-reviewed publications
- Maintains upkeep and calibrations of laboratory equipment
- Maintains cleanliness and organization of the workplace
- Assists in health assessments and possible field research with various species
- Maintains patient confidence by keeping laboratory information confidential
- Works in varying shifts/hours based on business need, to include opening, mid-, and closing shifts; weekends, and holidays
- Lifts, carries, pushes, pulls up to 50 lbs. / 20kg on occasion; extensive walking or standing indoors or outdoors; tasks that involve repetitive motions such as bending, stooping, or lifting
- Performs other duties as assigned
To be considered for this role, you will need to have:
- At least 2 years of proven experience in a zoo, aquarium, veterinary clinic, etc.
- Experience with non-domestic, exotic animal species, or veterinary medical setting
- Medical Laboratory Technology/Science(zoology), Diploma, or in a related field or equivalent
- Ability to obtain a license or certification for medical laboratory technologist in the UAE
- Familiarity with professional zoo/aquarium communities and non-domestic species
- Previous experience with data entry, various hematology and reproductive analyzers and equipment maintenance schedules would be a plus
- Excellent English communication skills and teamwork abilities
- Ability to be flexible and adapt quickly as the needs of the animal collection develop
- Knowledge in current laboratory equipment and technologies
- Knowledge in current computer application, including MS Office
- Basic mathematical skills
