Job Description

Mō tÄ“nei tÅ«ranga mahi | About this role

Junior User Experience Researcher (12 months fixed term)

If you're looking for your “why”, then come and join us at TEC. We truly believe in the transformational benefits of education and vocational training and as a result we invest $3 billion a year in tertiary education and training, and seek to broaden aspirations and lift the skill bases of all New Zealanders from ages 7 to 74.

We're on the hunt for a Junior User Experience Researcher to join our Products Services & Design team and help us shape the future of products that will make a positive difference in the lives of New Zealanders. This is a 12 month fixed term role to work on Tahatū - creating a new online career planning solution that will help people in Aotearoa New Zealand identify and clarify their aspirations and confidently make career plans for their life stage, constraints, and challenges.

Tahatū is being designed to meet the needs of all New Zealanders - and to do that, we need to make sure we understand needs, aspirations, motivations, and barriers for our key audiences. As a Junior User Experience Researcher, you'll have an important part to play - helping to research key groups and bring their voices and needs to the project team.

The Junior User Experience Researcher role will be working alongside a Senior User Experience Researcher - receiving on-the-job training, coaching and mentoring to help you learn the skills of UX research, and set you up for a career in this vibrant field. As it's a junior role, there is no need for prior experience - this role will suit someone who is looking for a career change, or to get back into the work force. If you are fascinated by people and understanding what underlies their behaviour, value equity and diversity, can communicate and create relationships with a wide variety of people, have good empathy for others, are naturally curious and want to know the ‘why' behind things, and are an energetic and positive person - this may be the job for you!

What will you be doing?

  • Working alongside a Senior User Experience Researcher to support the TahatÅ« project with rich insights.
  • Planning and running qualitative research to understand the needs, behaviours, motivations and barriers for our key audience groups.
  • Communicating with research participants to ensure they know they are respected, and valued and that they know what to expect when participating in research.
  • Analysing new and past research to pull out insights that bring the voice of the customer to life for the project team and inform the design for TahatÅ«.
  • Bringing insights to life for the TahatÅ« team, using a variety of storytelling methods (such as verbal, written, illustrative, etc.)
  • Expanding your knowledge of and championing inclusive and equitable design, learner centricity and the power of qualitative insights.
  • Working with a product team, including designers, developers, content writers, data specialists, and a product owner, to design and build TahatÅ«.

What will you bring to the role?

  • A passion for equity and inclusion and a drive to make a difference.
  • Experience communicating with a wide range of people, and you genuinely value the knowledge and experiences every individual has
  • A good level of empathy
  • Natural curiosity - always wanting to know the reason behind behaviour, and a habit of asking questions and using active listening to really learn from others
  • Passion for the power of education in helping people get to where they want to be
  • Energy and positivity, combined with pragmatisim - you get excited by possibilities and ideas, and understand practical limitations and how to work within them
  • Ability to form strong relationships with your team, TEC stakeholders and customers
  • Ideally you'll also have some skills in research - being able to go hunting for an answer amongst rich information sources
  • We are keen to talk with candidates who have a good understanding of Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori,
  • We would also like to interview candidates who have experience with or who are part of the disabled community
  • As this role has been designed to help someone start their career in User Experience Research, we are looking for someone who is genuinely interested in going into this field.

What will you get in return?

  • On-the-job training, coaching and mentoring in User Experience Research, to help set you up for a career in this dynamic field.
  • The opportunity to work on a product that will have a positive impact on the lives of New Zealanders.
  • Working within a vibrant and dynamic team of designers and researchers.
  • $57k - $65k+ depending on experience.
  • The TEC offers a range of benefits including flexible working options.

As part of the application process for this role, your application is to include your covering letter and C.V. Please answer the following questions as part of your cover letter:

  • What do you hope to get out of this role?
  • Why are you interested in User Experience Research?

Applications close on 5:00pm Tuesday 19 April 2022. For more information, or any questions, please contact hr@tec.govt.nz.

Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain the legal right to work in New Zealand. Appointment to a position at the Tertiary Education Commission will require the production of evidence, prior to the commencement of work, of a "My Vaccine Pass' issued by the Ministry of Health.

Prior to the Tertiary Education Commission confirming any offer of employment, pre-employment checks will be undertaken including criminal conviction history and reference checking as a minimum.
