The Mana Awhi-Older Peoples’ Health Service provides inpatient and outpatient services to people aged 65 years and older. It is part of the Community and Long term Conditions (CLTC) Directorate of Auckland District Health Board (ADHB). The purpose of the Directorate is to provide quality, patient-centred, self-directed care as close to home as possible by working in partnership, enabling self-management, and promoting independence. The service aims to provide world class assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation to people sixty-five years and over to optimise their health, function, and participation.
As a Geriatrician, you will be part of a team providing assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services to older people across inpatient, outpatient and community settings.There is an active Orthogeriatric and Trauma programme, a discretionary consult service to all relevant inpatient specialties and a well-established Emergency Department (ED) Frailty service.There is the opportunity to participate in stroke rehabilitation in ADHB’s new integrated stroke unit.We have an excellent working relationship with Mental Health Services for Older People (MHSOP), with two Old Age Psychiatrists and a Clinical Nurse Specialist providing a liaison service to our inpatient wards.We run a memory clinic with MHSOP and a Neuropsychologist. We have a Clinical Psychologist to support us on our inpatient wards. We have recently appointed our first Allied Health Consultant.
Other service development projects are developing the geriatric medicine liaison role to the acute surgical service with a vision to expand this across the wider surgical services (including pre-operatively) and to Oncology.

There are currently sixteen Geriatricians in our service. We are friendly and collegial with excellent working relationships with our nursing, allied health, clinical psychology and MHSOP colleagues. We are well supported by junior staff and we take regular annual and CME leave. Importantly, Auckland Hospital boasts wonderful coffee from our own Planet Espresso!

You must currently hold (or be eligible for) Vocational/Specialist Registration in Geriatric Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand (www.mcnz.org.nz), Appropriate postgraduate qualifications, relevant training and experience are required.
