The Opportunity
The Department: The Operations Department is comprised of four Branches: Administration, Parks and Forestry Operations, Roads and Fleet Operations and Solid Waste Operations. Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s public works infrastructure and systems including roadways; rail, winter maintenance; parks and green spaces, including forestry; solid waste operations; and maintenance of the corporation’s fleet of vehicles and equipment.
The Position: The Driver position maintains the sidewalks, roadsides and roads of the City of Barrie to ensure that the citizens and visitors of Barrie can commute safely. In the spring, summer and fall, this position maintains and repairs the sidewalks, roadsides and stairways. In the winter, this position assists in plowing, sanding and salting of sidewalks and roadsides. In addition, this position ensures that debris and litter is removed from sidewalks, roadsides and stairways.
The Candidate Pool: The City of Barrie is accepting applications for upcoming and future temporary full-time Driver vacancies. The Operations Department is establishing an eligibility list of qualified candidates who will be considered for furture temporary full-time opportunities. Applying to this candidate pool enables a candidate's application to be maintained on file so that they may be considered should a temporary full-time vacancy become available. The eligibility list will remain in effect for a maximum of nine (9) months, unless depleted before that time. The administration of this candidate pool will be done in accordance with Article 13:06 of the CUPE Collective Agreement.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
Secondary School Diploma
Experience
Six (6) months of experience performing duties related to the above mentioned major responsibilities
Demonstrated experience working in a municipal work environment
Demonstrated experience in municipal construction and maintenance
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
General knowledge of the following legislation, regulations, or requirements: WHMIS and Book 7 of the Ontario Traffic Manual, including the setup of a temporary work zone traffic control; and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, related regulations and associated protocols required to ensure a safe working environment.
General knowledge of the following principles and standards: municipal construction, maintenance and equipment operations; vehicle and equipment safety; safe lifting and handling procedures; and collection and disposal procedures for debris, litter and bulky items.
Demonstrated Ability to:
conduct sidewalk and road infrastructure repairs
operate manual and motorized hand tools
perform strenuous work, including heavy lifting of objects exceeding 10kg
effectively lead and direct an assigned crew
write clear and concise reports
maintain accurate records of job materials used and time spent
Intermediate skills include: Customer Service; Interpersonal; Written Communication
Availability to work outside of schedule work hours to perform standby, overtime, or emergency response duties
Conditions of Employment
Valid Ontario Class "D" Driver's Licence with a "Z" endorsement in good standing, or ability and willingness to obtain within 1 year
Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*
(*Please note that this is a requirement of the position for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Procedure. Existing employees will be grandfathered from this requirement.)
Other Important Information
Location: Operations Centre, 165 Ferndale Drive, North, Barrie, Ontario
Hours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
Wage: This position is within the CUPE Local 2380 Bargaining Unit with the following pay level and 2022 pay range:
Pay Level: Level 2
Yearly Salary: $46,321.60 to $55,390.40 per year
Hourly Pay Rate: $22.27 to $26.63 per hour
