At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whanau.

We help shape the policies, settings and performance of the education system for early learning, schooling and tertiary. We do this by building relationships and understanding the needs of those who receive our services.

We are making significant changes to how we deliver our mahi by:

  • Taking practical action to give effect to te Tiriti o Waitangi. 
  • Giving priority to regional and local voice. 
  • Delivering greater responsiveness, accessibility and integrated services and support.
  • Improving feedback loops and information flows.

About our team

Te Mahau | Te Tai Runga (South) provides leadership and integrated services to the sector and others. This includes services such as, learning support, education advice and regulatory functions for schools and early learning services. We also share practice and learnings collaboratively with other Ministry Groups to support insights driven guidance, design and policy.

As a team we are working to build stronger and more collaborative working relationships across the Ministry and with the sector and communities at both a regional and local level. The strength of these relationships will enable us to identify solutions that will ensure quality learning outcomes are achieved for all ākonga.

Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role

The Director, Office of the Deputy Secretary is a key leadership role responsible for supporting the Deputy Secretary and wider Group Leadership team with strategic and operational delivery.

You will provide leadership to the Office of the Deputy Secretary to ensure Te Mahau | Te Tai Runga is well positioned to deliver on its overarching strategic and operational objectives. You will drive significant cross functional work targeted at improving the performance of the Group and manage significant internal and external issues and risks that arise.

You're a strategic thinker and excellent communicator who is two steps ahead. You're able to anticipate and meet the needs of key stakeholders and in doing so build credibility. You deliver quality outcomes and have a proven track record of success in a leadership role in a complex public sector organisation.

You're also:

  • Strategic and collaborative with a sound appreciation of end-to-end sector facing delivery, contemporary management disciplines and enterprise thinking.
  • Understanding of the role and importance of education and the Sector's role in supporting both individual outcomes and outcomes for the wider economy and community.
  • Able to deliver improvements to key systems in complex organisational settings.
  • Leaderful and able to inspire diverse people through your leadership and relationship management skills and the ability to facilitate outcomes through personal credibility and influence.
  • Skilled to lead complex operational assignments, including project management and risk and issue management.
  • Knowledgeable of the Government's direction, policy priorities, planning and budgeting processes - especially Cabinet and Ministerial processes and procedures.
