Job Description

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud.  Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects.  Responsibilities

This position is for a Civil/Structural Engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME) that will work closely with our APAC team to provide design review and guidance, technical leadership, and coordinated design direction for civil and structural engineering elements for datacenter design, permitting, construction and site selection, due diligence, and master planning.  The Civil/Structural Engineering SME will work on multiple APAC projects and collaborate with the team that's launching Microsoft’s best-in-class cloud infrastructure worldwide.  

 

The Principal Civil/Structural Engineer SME will engage with key Microsoft stakeholders, Authorities Having Jurisdiction as well as external A/E consultants and contractors that specialize in datacenter builds to ensure that Microsoft’s datacenter technical design standards and quality are met.  The successful candidate will provide civil and structural engineering technical review and oversight for new datacenter designs, builds, leases, and renovations in addition to civil and structural technical support for site selection, due diligence, master planning and permitting. 

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil and/or Structural Engineering.  (Master’s Degree preferred).  
  • Professional Engineer in Civil and/or Structural Engineering (Structural Engineering license preferred). 
  • Ability to lead teams of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large datacenter environments. 
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in civil and structural engineering with experience leading large scale critical infrastructure projects. 
  • Minimum of seven years of experience in due diligence for greenfield, brownfield, retrofit and expansion of large-scale facilities including and not limited to geotechnical report analysis, topographic and boundary survey review, civil and structural design review, code analyses, covenant/restriction review, and coordination with Authorities Having Jurisdiction, building departments, and utility purveyors. 
  • Candidate must possess strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical design approaches and decisions. 
  • Experience in navigating in CAD, Revit, Sketchup, Bluebeam, BIM software for drawing review and development of conceptual level master plans during site selection and early design phases is desirable. 
  • Expert knowledge of building codes and regulations. 
  • Experience working in mission critical projects. 
  • Experience and working knowledge on land acquisition, master planning, permitting and development.  
  • Provide civil and structural engineering technical oversight for site selection and due diligence efforts with external and internal stakeholders. 
  • Able to travel domestically and internationally,  

 

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
