About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Contractors Engineering Manager to join our Rail team to work in Exeter.

Role Purpose:

To work with design organisations to deliver approved for construction design of multiple work packages covering primarily lineside civil engineering. Specific tasks will cover:

  • Produce written scope documents for tendering and awarding work;
  • Manage design interfaces with relevant interfacing disciplines;
  • Monitor progress of design delivery, manage change and resolve issues;
  • Keep control of costs and encourage cost effective solutions;
  • Ensure design risk assessments are carried out and residual risk is transferred;
  • Work with the construction team to ensure buildable designs are produced.

What you'll be doing

As a Contractors Engineering Manager you will:

  • Deliver all design in accordance with NR standard NR/L2/CIV/003 and NR/L2/RSE/02009;
  • Prepare design briefs for pricing for Remits as they are received;
  • Maintain a design tracker for all live proposed design works;
  • Manage document control and maintain registers during design delivery;
  • Contribute to internal IDR / IDC design reviews;
  • CAD compliance from design sub-contractors;
  • Develop and maintain strong Client and Stakeholder relationships;
  • As-built drawings are delivered once construction completes.

Who we're looking for

Personal Qualities and Experience:

  • Knowledge and experience of Network Rail design process;
  • Previous experience of the IDC / IDR process;
  • Application of value engineering processes;
  • Strong team worker and experience of collaborative/partnering working arrangements;
  • Understanding of electronic document management systems and their importance;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Experience of temporary work design;
  • Ideally IEng, CEng or working towards;
  • Membership of professional body;
  • Report weekly to CEM on design progress and critical issues;
  • Chair regular design progress meetings.
