The BAS-Data Engineer is responsible for working with upstream data owners, business stakeholders to understand data and automate and streamline data pull which will enable internal users to build models and perform analytics; as well as helping external field users with any data inquiries. Our sellers are key to how customers and partners understand Microsoft’s products and strategies, but how do we align the conversations of thousands of sellers with each other and with the company’s strategy? Within Strategy & Operations, the Worldwide Incentive Compensation (WWIC) team connects strategy to seller behavior in one of the most important ways:  by determining how sellers get paid. The WWIC mission is to Enable Strategy, Motivate Sellers, Reward Results. In pursuit of this mission, the team designs and implements variable incentive-based compensation plans for more than 30,000 sellers, sales leaders, and consultants across Microsoft. We are experts in Sales Incentive Compensation at Microsoft, responsible for aligning incentive plans and targets (quotas) to motivate seller behavior and drive the company's strategies. We are also the end-to-end owners of incentive compensation processes and data which includes quota setting management, delivering timely and accurate payouts, providing business insights based upon performance of sellers to field/segment leaders and executives, business partnering with the field/segments on Incentive Compensation topics, and driving continuous process improvement through review and analysis of incentive compensation performance.
Responsibilities
Work with external and internal stakeholders to understand data and business requirements and build an optimized data platform
Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
Understand the process, data structure and tools across the organization and seek for simplification, user experience improvement applying a data driven approach.
Create and maintain optimal data architecture. Liaise with upstream data providers to ensure quality, reliability and timeliness of the data feeds that go into the reporting platform
Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using relevant tools, for e.g., SQL, Azure, and other ‘big data’ technologies.
Keep data separated and secure following relevant national/international boundaries, while maintaining PII and Compliant data Security practices. Oversees data expiry practices and establishes and implements processes for data archival and expiry.
Understand the business strategy and implement changes to the tools and reporting to provide scalable and timely insights to enable data driven decisions. Work with sales compensation analysts, plan design and implementation, field advisors and other WWIC teams to support their data related technical issues and data infrastructure needs.
Bridge gap between technology trends and business needs and adopt best possible platform/techniques to ensure the reporting lands smoothly and in timely fashion.
Strives for high quality service, innovation, and high efficiency in delivery
Define KPI for measuring the success of operations and partner with the teams to ensure it lands well.
Qualifications
3+ years of experience with following tools:
SQL development, SSIS, SSRS, SSAS
Azure BI offerings (like Azure data factory, Synapse, Machine learning) or equivalent technology
Python
Experience in working with fast paced development, modern Devops approach using GIT, CI/CD Automation
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Informatics, Information Systems, or another quantitative field. Master’s preferred.
Demonstrated collaboration and proven ability to work effectively in a large, geo dispersed, and virtual team environment.
Provide skills in effective stakeholder management across organizational boundaries. Building strong relationships, deep understanding of the business needs, strategic thinking and problem-solving skills
Demonstrated ability to work in ambiguous situations. Can effectively cope with change, shift gears comfortably, decide and act without having the total picture and comfortably handle risk and uncertainty.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, particularly the ability to synthesize complex issues/scenarios into easy-to-understand concepts.
Drive for results having high attention to details and self-discipline.
Experience in leading virtual team of data engineers.
Location/Travel: You may be based anywhere in the United States. You can expect limited global travel, 0 – 25%, contingent upon Covid-19 restrictions.
The salary for this role in the state of Colorado is between $92,600 and $138,100.
At Microsoft, certain roles are eligible for additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These awards are allocated based on individual performance. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee’s role.
