What is the opportunity?
The Emerging Risk team oversees the enterprise process for identifying, assessing, prioritizing, and monitoring emerging risks. This includes:
- Leading the development of enterprise-wide guidelines and the team’s processes for identifying, assessing, and monitoring Top and Emerging Risks.
- Identifying, assessing, and monitoring the enterprise’s Emerging Risks, and communicating the associated analysis to senior-level audiences and decision-makers.
- As such, acting as Group Risk Management (GRM) thought leaders on specific Emerging Risk issues (e.g., COVID-19, inflation, supply chain disruption, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, artificial intelligence and machine learning, crypto-assets and blockchain, trade wars, political unrest, other geopolitical issues).
- Participating in cross-functional projects that include Emerging Risk elements (e.g., artificial intelligence, crypto-asset risk guidelines).
- Continuous monitoring of industries to keep abreast of sector developments, in order to ensure appropriate risk rating actions.
What will you do?
The Associate Director, Emerging Risk will:
- Lead the identification and assessment of enterprise-wide Top and Emerging Risks, by performing ground up research and analysis, assessing their implications and impact on RBC, and developing presentations and white papers.
- Monitor global economic and political events for new trends and developments, and develop executive-level analyses and publications.
- Consult and work with people from a wide variety of groups across the bank, including:
- Various teams within GRM, such as Portfolio Strategy, Environmental and Social Risk, Country Risk, Risk Appetite, Stress Testing, Governance & Operations, Operational Risk Management, and Enterprise Risk Reporting; and
- Other areas of RBC outside GRM, such as business segments, Economics, Enterprise Strategy, and other groups that may provide or use Emerging Risk insights and knowledge.
- Update the team’s quarterly Emerging Risk Dashboard.
- Identify opportunities to improve RBC’s Emerging Risk management processes.
- Review industry reports and other sources to identify key sector developments that could impact industry risk ratings.
- Prepare quarterly, annual, and ad hoc reporting of Top and Emerging Risks to senior management and the Board.
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have
- 3+ years of experience in the financial services industry, risk management, and/or consulting
- University degree in a relevant field
- General understanding and awareness of current global events, basic economic concepts, emerging technologies, and other trends
- Excellent research, analytical, and written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and conceptual thinking skills
- Experience developing executive-level reports, presentations, and other deliverables
- An ability to understand and explain complex concepts Proficiency with Microsoft Office (e.g., PowerPoint, Excel, Word)
Nice-to-have
- 5+ years of experience in the financial services industry, risk management, and/or consulting
- Graduate degree in a relevant field
- CFA, FRM, CPA, or any finance- or risk-related professional designation/certification
- Sound knowledge of the financial services industry, risk management and economics
- Proficiency with Bloomberg and other market sources
