What is the opportunity?

The Data Services group within Capital Markets is responsible for ensuring data is fit for purpose and accurate. As an Associate, you will be responsible for data quality control implementation, centralized exception handling and data quality issue management. This is a unique opportunity to assist the execution of key components of our first line data strategy. You will be called on to find solutions to complicated data issues and will face off directly with members of various regulatory operations teams, stakeholders from Capital Markets desks, and stakeholders within Business and Client Services (BCS). As a member of a dynamic, fast paced team, this role brings strong data analysis skills, effective written and verbal communication skills, a strong work ethic, and a demonstrated capability to multi-task effectively. This role requires strong interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skills as well as a demonstrated sense of urgency to respond to changing priorities at times.

What will you do?

Monitor data quality controls and investigate data exceptions.  Trend exceptions in order to identify the root cause of issues, and to develop solutions to address problems.  Reduce exception volumes over time.

Work with various stakeholder teams to understand how data is being used and to identify the data issues and gaps they encounter.  Map out data flows and transformations that are relevant to data usage.  Perform analysis to find the cause of issues, and facilitate the remediation of these issues. 

Develop new data quality rules and controls, and work with implementation teams to ensure that controls align to business needs.  Support the refinement of controls as requirements evolve.

Prioritize issues and data quality exceptions through measuring their material impact on business and regulatory processes.  Escalate critical issues as needed.

Produce metrics and reporting to demonstrate the effectiveness of controls and process amendments.

Build and maintain strong relationships with business users at both senior and junior levels

Ensure that new process and control solutions address immediate business needs, while ensuring system alignment with global technology strategy and application roadmaps.

Conduct data analysis in support of applications and projects, including identifying and documenting business rules, data needs and data specifications.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have:

Strong communication skills, to capture requirements and answer questions from stakeholders.

Excellent data analysis skills, including strong experience with SQL to generate custom queries and analysis, and leveraging Excel to link disparate data sets and trend data.

Post-secondary education in Finance, Economics, Computer Science, Engineering, Math or a related field or 5+ years of experience in the financial services industry.

Nice to Have:

Experience writing executable Data Quality rules and/or working with a portfolio of production Data Quality controls across multiple source applications and stakeholders.

Strong understanding of data lifecycles, including focus on data governance and knowledge of Data Quality classification.

Knowledge of IBM Information Analyzer/Stewardship Centre, Meta Data Manager, and/or Collibra to build and manage Data Quality rules and reporting.

Experience with data science methodologies, including machine learning and advanced pattern recognition.

Knowledge of global markets business processes and/or experience working with Market/Reference data.

Communicate effectively with RBC CM professionals at varying levels of seniority, including applying insight to determine the business impact of data issues that may arise in the availability, integrity or completeness of data which can be supported through better governance
