Job Description

ASSISTANT STORE MANAGER – CABLE STREET

  • Work as part of a national museum brand
  • Be a role model for exceptional sales and service
  • Support the Manager to coach, train and develop our team of Retail Sales Assistants

Te Papa stands proud as an iconic national building housing the treasures of our nation and is a vibrant destination for both national and international visitors.

An opportunity has arisen for a highly energetic and motivated retail professional to join Te Papa to support the growth of our retail sales business. Te Papa – Cable Street operates two permanent retail stores increasing to three on occasion to coincide with major exhibitions, as we are currently with ‘Rita Angus'.

Working in tandem with our Store Manager, you will coach and lead our Retail Sales Team to achieve excellent standards of customer service, and support their ongoing training and development of product knowledge and sales techniques.

Applicants must be available to work 40 hours per week across regular shifts as rostered over a seven day roster.  As Te Papa is open 364 days per year, weekend work is included in our rosters.

Ideally you will have:

  • Proven ability to inspire and motivate a retail sales work force,
  • 3 years' experience in a retail environment including at least one year in a supervisory or team leader role
  • Proven experience in customer service and sales, ideally from a tourist or gift shop background
  • Drive and passion for sales
  • A passion for customer service and ensuring every interaction is professional, helpful and proactive
  • A desire to learn about all of our products and their associated stories
  • An understanding of Maori culture and Taonga will be advantageous
  • Availability to work 40 hours per week over 5 days across seven days per week as rostered

We offer:

  • Excellent induction and on-going training.
  • Regular coaching and career development opportunities.
  • Access to excellent staff benefits across the museum.

If you have a passion for retail and want to support the growth of our retail business, through coaching, training and developing the Retail Sales team as we share the treasures and stories of our nation with our visitors, we look forward to hearing from you.

Please include in your cover letter:

  • Something about yourself and what motivates you to apply for the position
  • What you consider your key skills and abilities to be for the Assistant Store Manager position.

The starting salary for this position will be between $52,000 to $55,000 per annum. Offers will be made within the range to reflect the skills and experience offered by the candidate and those required of the role, and internal relativities with other employees.

Applications close on 9 March 2022.

Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain the legal right to work in New Zealand.

Appointment to a position at Te Papa will require the production of evidence, on commencement of work, of a “MY Vaccine Pass' issued by the Ministry of Health.

Prior to Te Papa confirming any offer of employment, pre-employment checks will be undertaken including criminal conviction history and reference checking as a minimum.
