Job Description

New Zealand Police is working with the community to make New Zealanders be safe and feel safe. With over 13,000 staff, we provide policing services 24 hours a day, every day. We operate by land, sea and air, manage over 860,000 emergency calls a year and are always actively preventing crime and crashes.

We’re working towards specific goals and targets that highlight our intent to work collaboratively with iwi and communities, other government sectors and business partners to deliver ‘Our Business’ and achieve long-term change.

Job description:

Firearms Vetter, it starts with you!

  • Based in Wellington
  • $56,220 - $76,059
  • Permanent, Police employee
  • Nationally advertised vacancy
  • JR 2057561

About the role

The purpose of Arms Safety and Control (ASAC) is to enable New Zealand to be a world leader in firearms safety through an effective regulatory and administrative approach to the Arms Act and Arms Regulations. The purpose of arms staff is to contribute to Our Business by being the safest country: one in which people are safe and feel safe by ensuring the safe use, possession and control of firearms.

As an Arms Vetter you will directly support the District Firearms Licensing Team primarily by interviewing firearms license applicants and other persons, to determine an applicant’s suitability to be issued with a New Zealand firearms license. Firearms Vetter’s generally start duty from home but have support at local police stations and from the national firearms team.  They are required to travel within their area to visit license applicants and referees in their homes to assess the security setup of the firearm and suitability of the applicant to ensure they are reaching the required criteria.

The hours of work are 8 hours per day between 0700-1800 hours Monday to Friday or by negotiation outside of these hours

Key Accountabilities:

  • Interviewing applicant and referees for a firearms licence.
  • Inspecting firearms security in private premises.
  • Inventory checks of firearms held by dealers and endorsement holders (eg, pistols, restricted weapons, prohibited firearms and prohibited parts).
  • Consistent and efficient processing of applications and reporting on security of each license application

  • A full NZ driver’s licence.
  • A reliable vehicle (mileage is reimbursed).
  • Competency in the use of an iPhone and HP laptop (software used includes Microsoft Office 365; Word, Outlook and re-writable PDF forms).
