Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the Role

We have an opportunity for one Analyst and two Senior Analysts to join our Macroeconomic & Fiscal Policy team. In these roles, you will have a significant opportunity to influence and help shape the macroeconomic policy agenda, including providing advice to the Minister of Finance. You will be surrounded by a team full of passionate and curious individuals and have a front row seat to what is happening in the New Zealand economy.

Our team is leading significant pieces of work and these roles provide an opportunity to lead or contribute to a number of projects, depending on the skills of the successful applicants. Our work programme is busy and fast changing, as we respond to developments in the economy. While the exact split of responsibilities will depend on the successful candidates, the roles are expected to cover the following areas:

• Fiscal strategy - developing and providing policy advice on the government's fiscal strategy, which may include topics such as fiscal targets, medium-term fiscal strategy, monetary/fiscal policy mix, fiscal risks and Budget allowances. You will work as part of a team and help lead engagement across the Treasury to inform policy advice.
• Macroeconomic frameworks - contributing to the Treasury's Review of Macroeconomic Frameworks, which is assessing the extent to which our monetary and fiscal policy frameworks remain fit for purpose, given significant challenges for monetary and fiscal policy that have emerged globally since the global financial crisis.

To be successful, you will be:

• Interested in macroeconomic policy. Formal training in economics or experience providing policy advice is highly desirable.
• An excellent communicator both orally and through writing to a range of audiences.
• Able to see and communicate the big picture and effective at distilling complex issues and analytical arguments into clear advice.
• A critical thinker who is able to ask good questions, think through issues with analytical rigour, and see things from a range of perspectives.
• Comfortable working at pace and used to dealing with ambiguity.
• Experienced at working collaboratively with others to develop agreed solutions and ability to influence
• Goal focused and able to build momentum behind your work to have impact.

For the Senior Analyst position you will have at least five years' experience working on complex policy problems. This may include leading the development of policy advice to Ministers or leading complex analytical projects. For the Analyst position we are looking for somebody with a minimum of 2 years' experience working in a policy or economics role.
